I've been having some issues with the Mac Pro (A1289) I use at work for video editing. Every so often, one or more of the external hard drives will become unresponsive and appear empty, requiring a force eject. It usually only happens when more than 3 are plugged in. I suspect it's an issue of the power supply not being beefy enough, but what do I know?

Do the drives have their own power adapters?

Great thought!:) If these are USB powered external HD's…could be exceeding the USB ports ability to power them.

As suggested invest in a mains powered hub.

All the hard drives are FireWire and have external power, except the little ones that get sent out and come back with batches of new media, which gets copied to the main media drive (and rsync'd to the backup drive).
