iphone & ipad not showing in iTunes

Updated both devices to IOS 8.0 plus all other updates to iMac. Now I notice that devices only show in iTunes if plugged in w/ USB. In the past, both devices would show w/o a direct connection. I backup both devices to my computer instead of iCloud. Is there a setting I need to make so that devices show w/o that direct connect?

No setting. And they won't show up until you update and install Yosemite. A real pain in my opinion, but that's progress.
