Will an ATI Radeon 9200 mac edition graphics card work in a pre-2008 Mac Pro?
(OS X 10.5.8 Leopard, 2.66 Ghz, 250GB, 4 GigsRAM)
My computer locks up after the chime, in the pale gray screen with the charcoal logo and spinning wheel after about a minute and a half of spinning.I would try reinstalling the OS, but it just quits when I try to start from a Tech Tool CD. (I got the drive to open by restarting holding the left mouse button). And I know the hard drive is okay because I ran fsck in single user mode & can access it from my iBook G4 via firewire.
The reason I think it may be the graphics card is that the pale gray screen now has waves of light aqua pixels across it, and when the crash occurred, 3D tiles on the screen suddenly became blown out as pixellated extrusions and the colors changed. If that doesn't sound likely, any other suggestions are welcome!

don't do it you will be sorry i can give you a better alternative.

go to amazon.com look up mac pro graphics card

Stay away from ati radeon x1900 series cards any others are fine just do not purchase a pc flashed card there worthless

i would recommend nvidia and upgrading to snow leopard or even lion for that model and you will have to flash any nvidia card you purchase no matter what to efi32 bit because that model of mac pro doesn't support efi64 bit cards

There is a big ole thread on this at MacRumors but the general gist is 5xx nvidia cards work as well as the Apple cards in the 1,1 2,1 MP.
