I'm looking to extend the display of my Macbook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011). I would like to be able to use my Macbook Air as the 2nd screen for that extension.
I have a thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable, but I'm not sure it's the right cable for the job. I don't know what to do with my hands. Advice?

You are looking for Target Display Mode and all that I read seems to indicate that this works on an iMac as the target while any Mac can be the display.

Assuming that isn't the case, try this sequence:

1. Connect the MBP and MBA with the Thunderbolt cable
2. Boot the MBP first
3. Boot the MBA next
4. Hit CMD+F2 on the MBA and see if it goes into target display mode and shows you the the screen from MBP..
