I have a MacBook Pro with OS 10.9.4. In a Finder window, I have selected (highlighted) a dozen folders. How can I have the Mac tell me the total size of the twelve? At the bottom of the window is “12 of 57 selected, 697GB available”. I take that to mean that with that knowledge I can calculate the total used by all folders on the hard drive, but not the total of the twelve selected folders. If I right-click one of the selected folders and choose “Get Info”, twelve windows open showing me the size of each folder, which I can then add up to reach the total of the selected twelve. But that seems a cumbersome method. Is there a way to have the Mac do the math for me, and tell me the total size of the twelve selected folders? Thank you.

Depending on where the folders are located (if they're all located in the same place).

- Just create a empty folder.
- Move all of the folders you wish to find the size of into this "empty folder".
- Then do a command + i on this new folder.

This will give you the total of all folders you're interested in. Then move the folders back where they came from.

There may be other ways to do this. But this is the first idea that came to me.:)

Nick,
Thanks. Yes, that would work. Good idea. I had not thought of it.
Curious, though, that the OS does not simply include the total of the selections in the line at the bottom of the Finder window, where it now says “12 of 57 selected, 697GB available”, have it say instead something like “12 of 57 selected, 53.5GB, 697GB available”.
Oh well.

Doesn't Show Inspector do this?

You are correct…great suggestion!:) I don't use this feature very often.

Hey "stefanmaine"…do as "toMACsh" suggests. Select all of the folders you wish to know the size of…then do the 3-key combo (command + option + i).

Or, Option> File> Get Info

With the Option key held down, it changes to Show Inspector.
