I have a MacBook Pro 15" from 2008. The operating system was recently upgraded from Leopard to Mavericks. When I insert a CD, it does not appear on the desktop, and is eventually ejected. There is no problem when a DVD is inserted. Thanks for any help that can be offered.

It sounds like either a defective or dirty optical drive. Buy a can of compressed air and blow several short blasts into the slot to see if that gets it working again. Before you ask, a defective or dirty drive sometimes can read a CD or a DVD and not the other. You may wind up having to purchase an external USB drive.
