I'm not conspiracy minded but it would not surprise me if one or more people connected with the NBA helped raise that 2 billion. It's not a matter of him needing the money it's a matter of value. IIRC the last team sold for less than a billion. I realize that was in a smaller market but I doubt the difference is 2:1.
Who knows…maybe some of the competing bids were well over a billion as well. So Ballmer did what he had to do to "win the auction". Like any auction…sometimes things sell for well above the estimated value.
I'm guessing Ballmer didn't bid 1 billion higher than anyone else. He probably simply bid a couple hundred thousand higher than the next higher bid.
