I don't quite understand why when I close a window by clicking on the little red "x" in the left hand corner, I still have to quit it in the top menu bar. Windows and Linux just close when the x is clicked. Is there a way to get this in OSX 10.5.8?

If you mean change the behavior of the Red X, no. If you want to be sure something quits, either quit via the menu, or hit ⌘ + Q on the keyboard.

Think of it this way. The red dot closes the WINDOW. Quit closes the PROGRAM.

And that is the way it is.

If you want to quickly quit an application…just use the two-key combo of command + q keys.:)

Unless of course one is running one of Apple's or some other developers applications that just happen to quit when clicking the red button. Ah yes, the consistency of it all - NOT!!! :D

Or if one wants, install the "RedQuits" app/utility if it still runs and works with the latest OS X:

But personally I wouldn't add such an extra to the OS, just use the two key method as suggested. At least it's consistent. ;)
