So I have some very large zip files sitting on my desktop, which I have been constantly unzipping as an attempt to bypass a file extraction error. As it turns out, not only do these files not appear in the destined location for the extraction, but the process has been eating up my hard drive space mysteriously, and I cannot find the **** files anywhere.

Is there anyway I can get my hard drive space back??

THanks

What software are you unzipping these with? What is in these zip files? Where did you get them from? What is this file extraction error you are dealing with?

Ok. Well the App Store version of the Unarchiver doesn't auto-unzip to a folder... it prompts you for what folder to send to. Or is supposed to. Did you get such a prompt? If so, where did you tell it to unzip to?

EDIT: And when you say your hard drive space is being eaten up, just how much space are we talking here?

1. I did. I chose the desktop, and nothing appears.

2. I went down from roughly 200 gb free space down to 140gb.

Mmmm hmmm. I'm downloading that file now to inspect it, but this will take a few hours. In the meanwhile, I suggest you test your hard drive (see my signature). Shrinking free space and missing files "may" be a worrisome sign of a failing hard drive.

You can also try revealing hidden files to see if that shows them. DesktopUtility can do this easily.

Mod note: I edited out the curse word from your post. Please consult the Community Guidelines for more details.

The files may have been hidden if the folders have dots at the beginning. Otherwise, a setting may have been unintentionally set to hide them.
