Can't seem to play video files

I'm running OSX 10.5.8. Doesn't this Quicktime play various video files like mp4, wmv, and .mkv? If not, what would?

What exactly happens when you try to play the files?

They won't play even when I bring up Quicktime and open the video file through it. I'll load the codecs. The same thing has to be done with Windows and Linux (Ubuntu).
