@Dave:

While you're there in Montauk, get some nice photos of the old Lighthouse at the point and post them here. It's been many years since I visited there. (I went to school on Long Island.)

I had intended to try the Google chat plugin for iPad to see how well it worked but that didn't quite happen.

Hi Chscag - which part of LI - it's a 100 miles long or so? We've been going to Montauk since 1973, but I just know the Hamptons and east to the tip - we usually fly into Islip and then rent a car for a 90 minute ride to their house in Montauk.

Just 4 miles or so from the tip and lighthouse which we use to visit a lot (pic below from the web) - our main activities now outside of visiting my MIL is a day trip to the North Fork to tour the wineries & eating @ Gosman's Dock - can taste the lobster now! Dave :)

Thanks for posting the photos. I haven't been back there for many years. I went to school in Valley Stream, Long Island which is around 60 miles west of Montauk. We would drive to South Hampton and Montauk point in the summer when the weather was good. At one time you could camp out on the beach and even surf cast for fish. I have no idea what it looks like today.

Well, I must say having gone to the east end of LI since 1973 (GOD, 40 years!), the area has not changed that much (some more houses of course) - the photo below is a map of the FAR east end of the island - the 'red arrow' is the location of Gosman's Dock; the 'blue arrow' is the approximate location of the family house (up on a hill w/ great views from the deck to Long Island Sound on the right & the Atlantic Ocean on the left), and the 'green arrow' the location of the Montauk Lighthouse - SO, the house in pretty much near the lighthouse w/ a lot of 'park' in between. Dave :)

Sunday Chat 10/19/14

Time fro the weekly Sunday Chat. I'd planned to discuss some ideas about reusing / recycling gear but I think we'll save that for week. I've got to look at that a bit more.

We'll talk about the initial release of Yosemite. I'll include a few thoughts on things to consider before updating as well as a few suggestions for how to do it with minimal headaches.

Here's a summary of the info in tonight's chat (including links)

Member chscag figured out that having FileVault enabled prevents enabling Automatic login

Apple’s Yosemite Install Guide (including system requirements) Their guide says 2 GB minimum ram but you’ll want more.

Apple Upgrade Page - Requirements and info on specific features

There are some Yosemite features not available on all Macs

RoaringApps site for compatibility info

If you need to run older PowerPC apps stay with Snow Leopard

Once you decide to update you need to answer a few questions and do a bit of prop.

Is your Mac running well at the moment? Resolve problems before updating. May need to let Disk Utility verify the drive.

Make a backup. I prefer a clone since that is the easiest way to downgrade if necessary.

Download and install Yosemite. At some point you will be given the option to continue the install. If you are going to make a bootable installer you need to do it then. After installation the installer is deleted

Minor delay folks. Show will start at 7:30 rather than 7:00.

Thanks. I actually enjoy doing the chats. In the future I hope to pull in other members to help out. It's much more fun when others are involved as well.

The ones that Dave and I have done together work well but he apparently expects to be able to travel around the country enjoying retirement. What's up with that?:)

I certainly intend fully enjoying retirement when I'm recovered.
