Got a Powerbook G4 with a 40GB HDD running v10.5.1. When I replaced the HDD with a 100GB one and used the install disk, I ended up with v10.3.1. How do I get back to Leopard?

That's easy. Just get on eBay and find a retail version of Leopard, buy it, and use it to update to 10.5.0. After that, use Apple update to go to 10.5.8. Remember, you need a retail version of Leopard, not the Silver-Gray disk, but the Black disk.

I take it you got the G4 used and the previous owner did the upgrade? If so, then what chscag suggested
is your only way.

And be prepared to spend about $80-$100!

If that is a little heavy, go online and download the OS X.3.9 Combo Updater and be happy with Panther.

I would not put a machine running less than 10.6.8 on the Internet anymore due to security/Flash/Java/compatibility issues.

I certainly wouldn't spend $100 on a Leopard disk, as that's three times what the machine is probably worth.
