Smart playlist on iPad duplicates songs

I have a smart playlist on my Mac of all tracks with a five star rating. When I try to copy it to my iPad or when I try to create one in iTunes it duplicates all the songs (they are already on the iPad, I am just trying to put them into a playlist). What am I doing wrong?

Hard to tell, but why not just sync the playlist from your Mac to the iPad?

Because I prefer to manage my music manually, I don't want to remove everything then start all over again.
