Not quite the answer to what you asked, but I have a Mac Air that I use for travel. Since I do a lot of photography and some video editing, I need a lot more disk space than is provided. I started by cloning the SSD onto an external USB drive which worked fine if slow. Since then I have upgraded to a Hybrid external drive and finally to a 500GB SSD in an external enclosure which runs almost as fast as the internnal drive.
