searching documents

I'm on a Macbook OS10.6.8 and suddenly changes are happening with my computer. There was a window in the upper right corner where I could type for what document I was searching. It's not there any more.

I'm not familiar with what window you are referring to, however, I usually just open Finder and search within it.

I think what you are talking about is the Spotlight feature. You can call up that feature at any time by doing either of the following:

1. If you see a magnifying glass in the upper right corner of the menu bar click there, or
2. Press the command key and spacebar simultaneously.

Pressing command option spacebar at the same time brings up a Finder window that can be used to search for files.

You can change these keys in the Spotlight preference pane.
