The WD external drive I use for Time Machine backups is 6 years old. How much longer is likely to keep working and what is the downside of leaving it there until it breaks? Thanks for your advice

The downside of having only a single backup, whether the drive is 1 day old or 10 yrs old, is that you will be without a backup when that drive dies until you get a new drive and create a new backup.

If that backup drive is still serving it's purpose, would suggest you get a 2nd drive and use it to create a bootable clone backup with either Superduper! or CarbonCopyCloner.

Like how long is a piece of string?

Whilst it works great. Now it has heard you are thinking of replacing it, get ready.........
