My friend has a PPPoE ethernet connection that was working fine. We attempting to set up a wifi network. We had one attempt and it didn't work. We plugged the Ethernet back in but now that doesn't work either. What changed in those few minutes? The Mac says it is connected in the system preferences network but the browser says there's no connection.

Reset the router and try again. Pay attention to the menu items in the router access menu. You should have a separate menu page for the wireless setup which includes encryption, setting a password, and SSID. You must apply the same password on the Mac in order to log on the wireless network you created. Do the setup with the ethernet cable plugged into your Mac.
