A while ago I spilled water to my Mac with OS X Lion. Apple support checked it and told me that the Mac died but they told me that the hard drive with the data was saved. I now got a new Mac with OS X Mavericks and I’m trying to connect my old Mac hard drive through as an external hard drive (with an external hard drive enclosure, using a USB cable) and the new Mac does not recognize the external hard drive (even though the green light is on in the external hard drive). Any suggestions on how to solve this problem?

Thank you very much,

Does the drive appear in Disk Utility at all? If so, try clicking on the disk in the list of drives on the left. Then choose Repair Disk and let the Mac attempt to repair it.

Adding to the above...

How do you know it doesn't recognize it?
Have you gone into Finder preferences and placed a check in External drives in the General tab if you want to see it on the desktop or in the Sidebar tab if you want to see it in the sidebar of Finder?

Thanks to both of you for your responses. This solved this problem, but now that I'm able to access the hardrive of my old mac, I have another question: How can I search in my old hard drive for documents created or modified within a date range (i.e. from 7 October 2013 to 1 May 2014)?

Please let me know if you think I should start a new thread with this new question rather than asking it here.

Thanks again,

Hopper

Open Finder

press 'command' + 'F'

then enter your search parameters thus...
