My Mac is a 21.5 in running OS X 10.9.3 and it has got really slow, and sometimes whey I am in Mail, I cannot select items, or when I hit trash nothing happens and I have to close out of Mail and start it again for it to work again. I emptied the caches to no avail. I just read a thread where TattooedMac showed how to reset permissions. Should I try this? Or should I get one of the Mac cleaners?

Stay away from Mac cleaners, the majority of the ones that are advertised are pure snake oil. The only maintenance and enhancement program we endorse here in our forums is OnyX which you can download from here. (It's free.) Also, go ahead and try what member Tattoo recommended.

And how full is the hard drive? You need 15-25% free space for it to work anywhere near capacity.

Thank you for your suggestions. I apologise for the delay in replying I got caught up at the nursing home here. I just checked and I only have aout 5% free space. so I'll have to transfer most of my photos onto another drive and keep the archive ones elsewhere. I just had to force quit Mail again, but I think the storage is the problem. I'm getting on a bit, but I still learn something new every day.
