Headphone problem with Powerbook

Hello,
So recently, when I plug in headphones to the headphone jack, no sound comes out from either the headphones and understandably, the built-in speakers. I have checked all the settings over and over, but the volume is up and is definitely not muted. This problem only started happening after I began using garageband, though, so I am hoping it is not a hardware problem. Has anything like this happened to anyone else?
I just want to know if there is some way to fix this before I take it into Apple. Thanks!

Is the lack of sound with all programs, or only one?
