Somehow I had a user delete the messages app from OS X and it will not load up. Any ideas on how to restore this?

Thanks
Max

Redownload Messages from the Mac App Store…then reinstall.:)

It's a system app, you can't re-download it. ;)

You can restore it from a backup if you have one. You might also be able to get a copy if you apply the most current combo update for your version of OS X.

I suspect you will have to re-install OS X in order to replace the deleted "Messages.app". You didn't mention which version of OS X the user is running but if Mavericks, a re-install will not remove or delete previous data. It will, however, refresh and replace any missing files or apps.

It sure looks like the same "Messages.app" to me. Nice find Nick, that will save the OP from having to reinstall OS X.

What made me think that it was the "real deal"...it says that the developer is Apple.

I'll say it's a bit misleading.

Wasn't a standalone version of Messages released for a while? I'm thinking maybe around the time Mountain Lion was released.

Yeah, it works but it's certainly misleading.

I think they might have before it became a built in feature sort of like what happened with FaceTime.

Not sure if you noticed. But in the link it says that the download size is 66.9 megabytes. Obviously not the full size of a complete Mavericks download. So this was another detail that made it seem like the link would just be for the Messages app.

So another misleading detail.

I have no idea where they got that figure from. Did they do some fancy math?
