iPhoto: "Lost" photos

I managed to delete one go my Events in iPhoto. I can see the photos in Library/Photos, and I also have most of them in an album. I cannot cut & paste them from either location into another event. I would like to recover or recreate the whole event. How can I do that?

Its been a while since I have used iPhoto, but can't you go into the Trash on the left hand sidebar and recover them from there ?? Or have I missed something ??

It's my understanding that deleted photos don't go to Trash. In fact, I believe that they're not actually deleted. They're out there somewhere. In any event, the iPhoto Event was actually deleted some weeks ago, and I've emptied the Trash since then
