Macbook Pro 13' Missing Sound Problem

Macbook Pro 13' Early 2013 10.9.2 Shows this hidden volume icon with a CENSOR sign through it. Have tried re-starting and shutting down as well as Audio Midi options, nothing resulted. Please help. Thank you

We assume you've already checked System Preferences, Sound, to make sure you're not muted or have incorrectly set the sound input? Next question: How about your headphones, have you tried them to see if sound is present? External speakers?
