Certainly true for us Brits of course but perhaps if Apple want to be truly global though they could start using iconic names from around the world. Personally I'd go for "OSX Marmite" (*) but maybe I'm just a little biased.

*Marmite - A delicious yeast based spread, great on toast. Beloved by all true Englishmen worldwide. Note, that latter sentence may not be strictly true.

So . . . is that pronounced:

1) Mawr Myte?

or

2) Mar Meh Tay?

or

3) ???????

That's rather simplistic. It's a matter of personal preference really, something Apple is famous for granting in its OS.

Huh? The Roman numeral X is pronounced as 10 (ten in English, diez in Spanish, etc). Anyone who "prefers" to pronounce it as "Ex" would simply be wrong. A movie made in 1976 would have in its credits the year "spelled" as MCMLXXVI, but no sane person would "prefer" to say it's the year "Em Cee Em El Ex Ex Vee Eye". The only slight exception I can think of is in titles. King Charles II is King Charles "the second". I'm pretty sure that if in medieval times, if someone "preferred" to say he was King Charles Eye Eye, they'd be thrown in a dungeon at the minimum.

Oh look, even Apple says it's "ten".
What is an operating system (OS)?
The current version of Mac OS is Mac OS X (pronounced "Mac O-S ten").

EDIT: Ever wonder how many people think OS X is pronounced as "O S Ex"? Quite a lot, actually, owing to ignorance of the Roman numeral system.

That's how I pronounced it when I joined the forum - didn't have a clue - only knew I didn't want Vista.

Sure looks like Yosemite is going to draw enthusiasm about a new OS not seen since Snow Leopard.

Maybe if we show some of our Brit friends the real "Yosemite", they'll like the name.

Take a look here.

SL drew enthusiasm? We might have to disagree on this one but that was one of the most uneventful releases I've seen (I've been around since Tiger).

Or our Vegemite "Vedge ~ ee ~ mite" glad its not "Vedge ~ Amity" but does taste a lot better than that English stuff ;P

Well, as far as OS releases go...

I personally think this will become the most downloaded OS in Apple history. It is offering so much, and for the power users, Yosemite is going to be their bread and butter, with seamless working between iOS Device and OS X.
We need to remember that what Apple showed us on Monday, is only a glimpse into the OS and there will be so much more for us to explore, but the core features they did show, is enough to have people excited, and going to WANT this OS, especially if they have a iPad/Mini, iPhone or iPod.

We have a lot to look forward to, and I think some are not going to like the new look that Yosemite is, (apple were careful to not sure the true look ie: Folders), but when it comes to the crunch, we like (or I do anyway) OS X for the usability and how it easily integrates with all my other products.
iOS 8 has finally come into what it should of been last year IMHO, so I think next year when iOS 9 comes around, they will again be rebuilding it from the ground up and we will see a now OS for our iDevices.

You heard it here first :p

Well chscag, the pictures are indeed beautiful, amazingly diverse in content and background and cover such a huge land area that I am almost tempted to employ the most over-used and irritating word in the English language - "awesome".

But, of course, I was referring to the pronunciation when I started this merry-go-round. And I'm glad I did because reading the voluminous replies has given much pleasure and fun.

The OS sounds like it will do the same.

I had a whiff of Vegemite once. ONCE! :Grimmace:

I'm inclined to agree. I was prepared to be more or less indifferent since Mavericks is (finally!) past the one bug that had been nagging at me and otherwise it's everything I thought I could hope for, but no more!

I don't know about rebuilding iOS 9. iOS 7 was the first real rebuild since the beginning and another rebuild after 2 years isn't likely. Maybe they'll save that for iOS X. ;) I agree many of these new features should have come much sooner, but I think that's easily attributed to poor leadership and infighting in Jobs' last days and the interim thereafter until Tim Cook cleaned house. They did a fantastic job with iOS 7 as it was in the little time they had to do it.

WHAT !!! Only once ?? You don't know what your missing, when in winter, Vegemite on Toast is a Staple :D

Yea, I might have gone a bit far there, but I'm trying to think of where they can now go along the iOS 7 Line of UI and UX . . . Now they have iOS 8 and what should of been . . . I suppose we will know in 12 months . . . haha

IMO, now iOS is really gone away from Android, and what it can do. I don't have a windows Phone, but I'm sure that the closest you will get in terms of Functionality with the PC OS in mind, to what iOS and OS X is. Android is just that now, a Phone OS, where as iOS is now a complement to OS X.

OSX Llanfair*pwllgwyn*gyllgo*gery*chwyrn*drobwll*llanty*silio*gogo*goch

OK then, record it and upload a Dropbox link, ´cos I don't believe ya . . . . . :p I have to admit, I was lost when I spent a week there in a Welsh town on the coast . . . They do the best Chips though !! :D

Excellent answer. Caught up is more correct but in a way they still have not Caught up.

Example: Close friend who works for our government in a top secret area I can not mention, but also does IT for same.

He needed this Anti Virus file for a different OS they were trying. His work as you can imagine is totally locked down. I even put the anti Virus on my own server, Renamed it, 7Zipped it, yet his work internet would still stop the transfer. He was about to give up and go home for the night when my brain came alive.

He has a Samsung Galaxy s4. I asked him if he could download it on the phone using his Data plan and then plug it in VIA USB and transfer it to the computer he was working on. He went Darn you are smart, and it worked.

See with Android he could just plug it in to USB and it would mount and the file system was there for him and just copy it over! If he were using an iPhone no soap!

That was the day the light turned on for me and I ordered my first ever Android device. Just that one feature will save me hours trying to work with Drop Box which would have never worked behind his work Firewall!

You know, you are actually making a case for why that agency should be banning Android devices, due to their ability to circumvent security measures in place. *cough cough*

Oh brother. An Anti virus Software is a threat! Cough Cough! :D

Go ahead and fight to get info off the iPhone. It's fine with me. :D

BTW the security at work is to keep users from their personal downloads and games and porn at work, not to stop an IT person from getting what they need to do their job.
