How do I open an .img file?

Hello!
Can someone please advise how I can open an .img file on my Mac OS 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion) OS?

What type of IMG file are you referring to ?
A disk image ( CD / DVD / etc ... )
I know that some GPS manufacturers also use IMG file extensions.

If you're just looking for the contents, double clicking it will mount it as it would a dmg file.

McBie's point is a good one, as .img files can also be graphic image files. I think GRAPHIC CONVERTOR would open that type.
