I have an old 2008 Mac Pro and would like to upgrade the processor as much as possible. Anybody know what year processor I could upgrade to? has anyone tried it?

The CPUs you are after are the 3.2GHz X5482 model. Be aware there is a lot of discussion the upgrade is very limited and many report not worth the money. Different when I upgraded my Mac Pro 1.1 2GHz to Quad Core 2.66Ghz which flew.
Firstly make sure you are running the 3.1 Mac Pro model as there was a later 5.1 model with a single 2.8GHz CPU. Have a read of this:-
