It's a white 20-inch Late 2006 (other specs at bottom), and lately the fan noise is noticeable. Not huge, it is not going crazy, but used to be not heard at all.

Fan is running around 870 rpm with a core temp at 53 degrees C. I'm just typing emails and stuff; processors are sitting at a quite low %

I *think* the fan used to sit more like 600 rpm? Maybe I'm getting confused with another machine I had to put smcFanControl on.

This really bugs me-it's not the end of the world, but my house can be very quiet and one of the reasons I loved these machines was silent fans.

Memory 3 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics ATI Radeon X1600 256 MB

Fans do wear out (the fan bearings). Maybe the fan is simply getting worn out.

Yes, it's definitely not a young machine!

But the sound is not that harsh bearing kind of sound. It just seems like the fan used to run at a lower speed

I think that you may be "splitting-hairs" a little bit (difference between 600 and 870rpm's).;)

What I mean is...yes...the fan(s) may seem louder...but the small difference in rpm's can easily be due to being in a warmer room than usual, doing something different (more demanding on the computer)...or both.
