I have a Macbook Pro running 10.9.2. For about the past 6 months, I've noticed that when I try to open a preview of a .pdf file from any website, I get automatically prompted to save the file. There is no work around that I know of so I've had a TON of unnecessary downloads saved on my computer from documents that I simply wanted to view once. This might seem silly but I have no idea what to do so that I don't have to save every single .pdf file that I'm trying to view online. Any suggestions?

Safari - Preferences - General tab

very bottom - Open "safe" files after downloading

It's not recommended and while I can be on the extreme end of sites that I will even allow downloads from - even I don't have that item checked any longer.

The proper course of action would be to open the Downloads folder and delete the item when you're done viewing it.

Thats strange, because ANY PDF File should only be showing up in the browser first, and from there you have the option to download it, by moving your cursor to the bottom of the page.

Do you have Adobe PDF Reader installed and set to Automatically download PDF's ??

Thank you very much, however, I guess I should have mentioned that I use Firefox.

It doesn't matter which browser you're using - the control of being able to open those files directly in the browser vs needing to download them is controlled by that preference in Safari.
