Is there any downside to buying a MacBook from a store other than Apple? I'm talking about from a reputable electronics or camera store.

Not really...assuming the price is the same or lower. The Applecare warranty is still applicable anywhere.

So any Genius Bar would work on it. Not unlike buying a car at one dealer and bringing it to another for repairs? Thanks

Like Nick stated, buying an Apple product from other than Apple direct is fine. There are many authorized Apple dealers who sell Apple products: Best Buy, Amazon, Fry's, Tiger Direct, Micro Center, B&H Photo, to name a few. An Apple store genius bar will work on any Apple product regardless of where it was purchased. Whether or not they charge you for the work depends on the status of the initial warranty.
