Can I connect my iMac 24" as a display to my MacBook Pro?

I just purchased a MacBook Pro and would like to connect my iMac 24" as a display. Tried using ScreenRecycler with JollyFastVNC and was useless. Is there any way I can use some sort of adapter or wire to connect the 2? Is it possible through the FireWire port?

Your iMac 24" has only one video port and it's an output only. You may be able to tie in your 24" iMac to the MacBook Pro using target mode, but you didn't mention which MacBook Pro you purchased?

Thanks for your reply chscag, my MacBook (Retina) is a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16GB RAM at 1600 MHz DDR3 if that helps. Thing is I work as a Graphic Designer and bought the MacBook to be more mobile and less dependent on my studio but its so much faster than my iMac that Id like to work completely on it and make good use of my 24" iMac screen while working in my studio. And I really cannot afford to buy a separate screen which is what I need right now.

Only iMac's with a video in port can be used an an external monitor. Only newer iMac's have this. The older 24" iMac's do not.

If the app "Screen Recycler" did not work out for you. Then pretty much the other common/reasonable option is to get a separate external monitor. Depending on the size...used external monitors can be purchased rather inexpensively via Craig's List (or eBay).

Another option (since you mentioned that your iMac is so much slower than your newer MacBook Pro)...is you could sell your 24" iMac...and use the $$$ from that to purchase an external monitor.
