Sorry if this has been discussed before.

The cursor on my MacBook Pro (running Mavrick) is moving around erratically without any input from me on the track pad. When I try to move the cursor using the pad, the cursor does not follow my finger.

Just to throw this out there; the battery is about 5 yrs old (can only keep a little over a 2 hr charge). I've heard that a weak battery, even if on the charger, can cause problems.

It's not the weakness of the battery that can cause problems... it's that when a battery gets on in years it begins to swell. That might be causing the problem with the track pad. The battery has swelled and is pushing upward on your track pad. You need to check that out and change the battery if it has swelled otherwise it can cause damage to your MacBook Pro.

Thanks, you are correct. New battery and no problem with track pad.
