minidisplay port to hdmi

How may I know if my MBP can send Video and AUDIO signals to a LED TV via minidisplay port to hdmi. When I try to find a path in the configuration preferences/sound it only appears speakers/internal as option. Is it possible to find a way to route the video and AUDIO signals through the minidisplay port? Thanks in advance, Héctor

You probably need two cables. One for video & one for audio.

Hello, Nick, thanks for your answer! I think that the minidisplay connection (in MBP models delivered at end of 2010) is capable of delivering video and audio to HDMI inputs of external devices, using the correct/cable adapter.
The main question I have is how to route those signals to the mdport. I've been told to do this via configuration/sound routine, but I do not find a related option in the settings program.
Is it any software path that I am not using? Apple sells the appropiate cable, but the problem sims to be in my MBP configuration.

Go to System Preferences...then Sound. Everything is there.

You may also need to setup your LED TV to accept the sound and video coming in from the computer.

Just remember...if you are mistaken about your MBP's mini-display port being able to do both sound & video...then you will need two cables (one for video & one for audio).

Ok, Nick, the main problem that I am facing now is that the phones connector in may MBP has a loosy contact, and it seems to be very difficult to repair. Do you know something about this issue?

If the headphone connector on the computer is loose...this is repairable in some situations. But in many cases (depending on the severity)...it's not a simple repair. Do an internet search for "laptop audio jack repair"...and you will find lots & lots of info.

MBP version 5,1; 5,2; etc; does not carry audio via mdp.

MBP version 6,1 and above does carry audio via mdp.

You are not going to see any option for selecting it unless you have your MBP actually connected to a TV.

Nick, you should not need a separate audio and video cable for any 2011 model Mac. They are all capable of passing audio and video via their mini displayport. If yours is not working - my guess - you have a 1st gen mdp adapter - those also did not carry the audio - some of the el cheapo 2nd gen + versions of the adapter also did not carry the audio - they abounded on Amazon for awhile.

Click on the Apple - top left - About This Mac - More Info... - System Report - look for Model Identifier - 2nd line on that first screen - that's with OS X 10.9.

I do go for the "el cheapo" adapters ($6.00 bucks vs. the $20-$30 dollar types)...so that very well could be the issue. I'll have to get hold of a better quality adapter to test things.

Check monoprice - should be under $10 from them - they're not selling the 1st gen adapters any longer.
