I've read a lot of articles and forums on this subject and there are some recognised problems related to kernel panic and faulty graphics cards but I found a simple answer to the same problem that my wife was experiencing on her MBP. She would turn it off before bed only to have it power up at about 2 am.
I discovered that Carbon Copy Cloner which she has running on a My Passport USB HD has the ability to switch on her MBP for a scheduled backup if the option "wake/power up the system for this task" is ticked. I believe this will only happen with a bootable clone.
I changed the time to 0800 and 2000 and unticked the above option and no more problems.
Just goes to show sometimes the easy answers are the best.
