What are you running that needs Sony drivers? The panic occurred when a kernel extension was loaded, and the last one to load before it happened was Sony.

Also, why haven't you upgraded to Mavericks? I'm assuming you upgraded to Lion from your original OS X Snow Leopard. Mavericks is a free upgrade, Lion is not.

the sony driver would be for ingesting XD cam format. I do video editing and get footage on lots of different formats. I will try to remove the driver and see if that helps. I only updated from 10.7.4 to 10.7.5 when the trouble happened. I also haven't gone to Mavericks cause I run Logic Pro 9 for work as well and edit on Premier Pro and life would be a disaster if they are not supported so i am still checking if they are.
Thanks for the advice chsca and I'll give it a go later today.

Thanks chscag
I re installed the SxS drivers and the problem has gone away. I read a few other forums on those drivers once you headed me in the right direction and it seems they give a few Mac users grief. I have a big edit starting next week so I thank you again for the advice and I think for the moment I'll leave the system as is till after the job is done then maybe explore Mavericks.
