How do I reduce the size of a dmg disk?

I created a dmg with disk utility with the capacity of 44GB to store files a while back but now i've started deleting files and I would like to reduce the size of the disk. Is there a way I can do this?

Do you mean you created a 44GB partition on your hard drive?

Disk Utility will do this but there is always a chance the partition may be erased. Suggest making a clone on an external drive and then you can change the partition size and copy files back of necessary.

No the .dmg will stay the same size as you delete files from it. What you need to do is to make a new .dmg with the files you have left and delete the 44GB .dmg.

Have you considered using a sparse bundle. When the file is created a limit is set and the size of the file can fluctuate up to that limit.
