Packets in and out

Mac Pro quad dual processors
In activity monitor there seems to be a large number of packets being sent out. For example right now I have 396,223 packets in and 301,895 packets out. Safari web content shows 230,145 packets received ans 634 packets sent. The rest of the activity lists about 1500 packets sent. There is no unusual CPU or Memory activity. What could be generating these sent packets? Mac Pro mavericks
