how to restore favicons? (Safari)

Yesterday the favicons were fine. Now they're all gone (all I have is the blue globe). Why did this happen and how can I restore them?

I have an iMac (OS X 10.8.5) running Safari 6.1.3.

Your favorite site icons (favicons) are gone because you either re-set Safari or wiped out the Safari meta data. If you have a Time Machine backup, you can restore Safari to an earlier date. If no backups, then re-visit each site to restore the favcon(s).
