If you make one yourself using an external enclosure, preferably with a fan, and an internal burner the price will drop significantly. I've heard the magic number for external HDs are 50 cents a gb. Keep that in mind when shopping for one.

Here is what I did. Staples has a 200GB hard drive for $40, after rebates.
Look here: http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/s...logId=10051&langId=-1&ddkey=StaplesZipCodeAdd
If the link doesn't work, look for item # 504517 at staples.com.

Newegg has a USB 2.0 enclosure that works with OS X, Windows and Linux for $30 shipped.
Look here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817146307

There you go, a great USB 2.0 200GB external hard drive for under $75.

That's the way to go, but I would recommend getting an enclosure with a fan. Those HDD can really heat up. I got this one:

It's a little more expensive, but the fan keeps the HD nice and cool.

One of the photos shows the driver CD - for windoze. Is OS X smart enough not to need that? But this is the enclosure, not the drive.

You don't need the disc. Just pop in a HD, format it through disc utility, then it will work. And yes, this is just the enclosure. You need a HD on top of it.

I forgot to mention that firewire drives are often faster than USB 2.0 drives, on OS X.

Also, OS X can boot from an external firewire drive, but it cannot boot from an external USB 2.0 drive.

(The reason that I bought the USB enclosure is that I partitioned the drive for use with Linux, OS X, and Windows and use it on machines without firewire ports).
