Learned something today...

and never had occasion to try it before.
Click on Applications in the Dock. Now press the first letter ( or two) of an application you're looking for.
It scrolls down to it. Beats heck out of scrolling and finding. I use that folder as a launcher of sorts.

Works in any Finder folder or dialog as well for quick access to a file.

Yeah, I used to do this a lot on Windows XP at a job I once had where I often needed to search through a large number of individual files. Great little shortcut.

Another tip...
Open the stack and press command + or command-shift - (minus)
Resizes the icons.
