I just tried to open a file which is only a few weeks old and received this:
You need a newer version of Pages to open this document."
Is it necessary to buy the new version?

Where did you get the Pages file from that won't open? Obviously, it was created with a newer version of Pages than that which you have. The latest version of Pages is 5.2 (1860) recently updated by Apple. If your copy of Pages is from iWork 09 and the Pages file you're trying to open was created with the newer version, then, you'll need to update your copy of Pages.

If you recently purchased a new Mac, the latest version of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are free from Apple.

It was created on Pages 09 on iMac. Other files even later open ok. Only a couple so far require update.
Strange.

Found version 5.2 was in Launchpad. Moved it to dock. Removed ver 4.3.
All is well now, thanks.

OK glad to hear you're up and running with the new version. Wonder why it was in Launchpad rather than on your Dock? When I downloaded the free copy of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, they all installed directly to applications and placed an icon on my Dock.

Apologies for hijacking the thread, but the question probably doesn't warrant a separate one anyway:

Does the new Pages/Numbers/Keynote support open document format?

I know the old version(s) didn't, and not really expecting the new one to do either, but ... :Smirk:
