does deleting a disk image restore the space used?

1. my HD has 250GB limit and do l check "storage" in "system report" for storage space available?
2. does deleting the disk image and emptying the trash, mean l retrieve the space? eg if disk image is 5GB, if deleted completely, l regain that 5GB?
3. why can the password protected disk image be deleted without a secure pw login?

On number 1 Right click on the drive icon, then Get Info. That will show how much space is used and available on the drive.
On number 2, yes.
On number 3, it shouldn't, I think. I haven't PW protected any drive images.

Thanks for reply, l am still unsure why the pw protected disk image can be deleted without using a secure pw login. any idea how to set it up so this doesnt happen? or how to set the properties of the disk image

Password protecting the disk image does nothing to it as a file. In other words, it's still a file like any other. The OS can't distinguish between what is and isn't password protected - it looks like any other disk image. This is why you can delete it without providing any sort of credentials.
