I just switched from a MBP to a new iMac. On my MBP when I clicked the icon to empty the trash the confirmation window that came up indicated I was "Securely Emptying The Trash", as opposed to the window on my new iMac that simple confirms that you want to empty the trash - the difference being if you securely empty the trash it makes recovery of the stuff you dumped a lot harder or maybe even impossible. I speak with very little authority on this issue - so, how do you turn on the "Securely Empty The Trash" function? THX

You can also press & hold the "command" key.

- Press the command key & you get "Secure Erase"
- Don't press the command key & you get the "regular" empty trash

The option I posted makes Secure Empty the default action. I modified the post to indicate checking the box to make it sticky.

Not sure I would want "secure empty trash" on 100% of the time. There's always the possibility something is erased accidentally...and it may want to be recovered.

But that's just me.;) Certainly depends on the user & the environment the computer is located.

Secure Empty Trash is great - if you are a Crimean spy!
