Upgrade from Lion to Mavericks rendered many HP printers no longer able to scan from Mac. Updated drivers required. Does anyone know how to determine when needed HP drivers will be available? Mavericks updates don't provide any info about this problem for more than a year so far..

Have you tried connecting the printer to the computer then opening the Printer and Scanner preference pane and adding the printer that way? OS X has the drivers fro many printers included.
Also, if you have a driver from 10.7 or 10.8 they often work with 10.9. When I did the upgrade from 10.8 to 10.9 I don't think I even had to change the driver from my Canon Pixma MP 990 all in one.

If your printer, scanner or AIO unit is on this list, the driver is built into Mavericks and the printer simply needs to be added or re-added and it will work as before.

I have the same problem with my HP Photosmart C3100 despite installing the latest driver. HP Scan crashes whenever I try and use it. so I now use Image Capture.

I haven't tested this with Mavericks, but I used to load the Gutenprint drivers in older versions of OSX to bring an ancient Samsung laser printer to life.
That may be an avenue to try, but be aware that Mavericks' GateKeeper might complain if you try to load it.
