Good morning,
I'm a new member here and have several questions about memory problems that I seem to be having.

This will happen on both my Mac Pro tower (16g ram, 500g storage) and my Mac Pro laptop.

I'm a photographer so I'm working with large image files, sometimes as large as 100meg. Running Capture One Pro and Photoshop.

I get a warning that my start-up disk is almost full. I'll check and find that I only have 750kb of memory left. I'll then move files to my LaCie drive.

But the other evening the tower went from 20gig of free space to less than 100mb without any input from me. This has also happened on the laptop.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

This is the OS using temp space to work with the massive files you're opening. Remember that Photoshop isn't just keeping one copy of your 100MB image handy: it's keeping a full history of everything you've done (think multiple copies) unless you've turned that off/limited it.

Solution: you need a bigger HD so that you can keep TONS of free space open if you're going to work on big files like that.

Mac Book Pro memory question

Hello Gang,
I'm having a problem with the hard drive memory in my lap top. It will have 10g of memory one day and drop to 500kb in a matter of days without runing any large apps such as Photoshop.

I've removed all of the movies, most of the photos, emptied the cache, and ran the disk repair.

Any suggestions as to why this is unstable?

Thanks

another question.

Thanks for your response.

I transfered all of my big files off the computer but still seem to have a problem with dissappearing memory on the lap top.

Suggestions?

You didn't say how large your HD is...but the free space numbers you mentioned are way too small. Generally speaking...for a Mac computer to run efficiently...you need 10-20% feee HD space.

From a terminology standpoint...hard drive space is not "memory". Memory is ram.:)

When this happens, use something like DaisyDisk to see what's taking up space. It sounds like one of those applications is creating (multiple) temp files that are huge.

Disk Doctor and Memory Clean - both by FIPLAB on AppStore - great little apps, cost next to nothing and do the job perfectly.
