Dock icons missing - Downloads and Applications

10.6.8: These 2 icons used to be on the RH side of the dock (on the bottom) but both have disappeared - Applications a long time ago, and now Downloads. Might have been something Wifey did, and I can't figure out how to put them back.

Open Finder, find the folder, drag the icon the the Dock on the RH side. Done.

I futzed around doing just that before I posted. I guess my technique was lacking, but I've got Downloads back in the dock except the most recent download is no longer at the bottom of the stack like it used to be - it's at the top. I can live with that but I can't figure out why the order changed. Thanks for the tip ...
