I've heard that, but I've been told that this is an old version (10.8.5.) and not update any longer it may be susceptible to malware.

There is definitely some malware out there that can impact OS X, no viruses though. Smart computing can keep you safe from malware but if you wish to run an AV program for OS X, that's strictly up to you. OS X 10.8.5 is Mountain Lion which is still supported by Apple so I don't know what you've heard.....

Would be interesting to know who puts out these stories. Microsoft?

I've used MacScan for a few years now ... all it ever found is a couple of tracking cookies, and that was before Ghostery time
