desktop play feature (dont know what to call it)

Mid 2012 MBP - 13" i5 3210M, 16GB RAM, 240GB SSD, 500GB storage (in place of optical).
so i have an audio file on my desktop
Lindsey Stirling's Beyond the Veil
and i can click play on the icon
but if i select something else like to chrome
then it stops
is there a setting that i can change to allow it to keep playing in the background?

i really dont want to open iTunes if possible
and i dont want to buy anything if possible again
thanks for any help

What application are you using now to play the audio file? (iTunes should be the default.) You could download the free VLC and use it to play the file while you're doing something else.

Also, you should be able to use just about any app that will play music or an audio file and have it continue playing in the background while using Chrome, Safari, or your favorite word processor.

I think what is happening now is the OP is using Quick Look to play the file.

@OP To confirm my suspicions can you try an experiment the next time you are playing the file? Start playing the file just as you are now. When the file starts playing click on a graphic file and tap the spacebar. If the sound stops and you see the picture QuickLook is the culprit.

VLC is a good option. You can also right click (control click) the file and play it using
QuickTime Player as well.

Good catch Sly, that would indeed cause the audio to stop if he then opened Chrome or any other application.

Open a Finder window, navigate to the Desktop folder. Click the play button in the preview. Open whatever application but leave the Finder window open in the background. It keeps playing.
Note: It'll quit when finished and wont go to another file.
