2013 MacBook Air - No HDMI Sound

I have a 2013 11" MacBook Air 10.8.5. Using the Mini Display Port connected to my TV via an HDMI adaptor there is video but No Audio. System Preferences->Sound->Output does not show any TV's.

Is there a solution? Thanks

(I also have a late 2008 MacBook Pro that has this same problem but it's my understanding audio is not supported on the earlier models, but it should be on the 2013 Air)

What mdp adapter (specific - brand - link if possible) are you using?

If you bought the adapter back in '08-'09 or a elcheapo off Amazon or ebay, it's possible the adapter does not support audio.
The first couple of models from some brands made during those couple of years did not support audio and there are still some floating around.

Thanks guys. Let me clarify, and this may be the problem , it's actually a Mini Display Port to DVI adaptor from Apple. I use a DVI to HDMI cable from Belkin.

In addition to what you've already been advised about the DVI cable.... using multiple adapters will also degrade the video signal. It's never recommended to use that kind of setup.

Thanks. The other one for the MacBook Pro supposedly works by combing the video signal of the Mini Port with the audio of the USB into an HDMI cable.
