Best way forward when you want to re-use a machine from a previous owner is wipe it clean and re-install the OS from scratch. All other techniques are " best effort ".
The other advantage is that you have a clean machine with only the software/processes you want/need.

G'day and welcome to the forums James.

What operating system? OS X.6 Snow Leopard ask him for the install disc, pop that in and reboot holding down 'C'. Go to Utilities in the Menu Bar, Disk Utility and erase the drive, back to the Installer and run that. If it is Lion OS X.7 or later you will need your own Apple ID to download a nice new operating system.

Whenever I get a "new to me computer" (aka used);)...I always like to wipe & reformat the HD...then do a fresh OS install. This gets rid of the former owners info...and I start fresh (possibly eliminating any "junk" or other inefficiencies from the previous owner).

Basically eliminating any "legacy" issues.:)
