I have a 4-year old MacBook Pro that needs a new battery. It will cost $184 to replace. Do you think my Mac will last long enough to justify replacing the battery or should I start thinking about getting a new one?

You didn't say anything about your current 4 year-old computer not being able to do anything. So what is less expensive...$184 for a new battery...or $1200+ for a new computer??:)

Assuming the a 2010 model with adequate memory it should be fine. This model is capable of running Mavericks, the latest operating system released.

Its a electronic device, and because of that, it could fail tomorrow. On saying that, a lot of people around here are posting on this forum with a 6/7/8 yr old Macs.
To ask how long it will last is like asking how big is a Hole or how long a piece of string is.

As Nick pointed out, a battery is far cheaper than a new Mac, and even if it lasts another year and you need to buy again, I think you would of made your $ back.
Buy a battery, and then follow Apples Battery Calibration guide to get the most out of it, so it could last another 4 yrs and more.

I replaced the battery in my 2008 MacBook Pro about a year ago and it's still running beautifully.

That year bought me time time to save up for my new MBP Retina, and I gave the old MBP to a friend who is still using it daily.

My recommendation: replace the battery and keep on ticking. :)
